SIX new ‘studio screens’ open at Poole’s Empire cinema to make it one of the largest in the South.
The £5million refurbishment at Tower Park, bringing 500 extra seats and top-of-the-range projection and sound systems, means Empire Cinemas can show a greater range of films.
Coming just in time for the summer blockbuster season, the upstairs expansion will also be available for private hire and conferences.
The cinema’s general manager Susi Teall, said: “I am extremely proud of what we have brought to Poole and what is an amazing transformation of the complex.”
The challenges faced during the refurbishment and expansion of the Empire Cinema in Poole, was to split the works into 2 phases, 1st phase being the refurbishment of the existing 10 screen cinema, foyer, concessions and toilets and the second phase was the expansion onto the first floor to incorporate 6 new state of the art digital studio screens.
During phase 1, which was the refurbishment of the existing cinema, the challenge was to ensure that there was 8 auditoriums functional at any one time, allowing the cinema tocontinue trading, which meant working around the cinema, and the general public, and within a live environment.
Phase 2 challenges were to incorporate the vacant first floor space with the rest of the existing cinema, and provide WC and retail facilities to serve the studio’s.
- Isolate areas within the cinema to allow the building works to take place, whilst providing the least disruption to the cinema, and public.
- Foyer and public area works were carried out overnight, and re-opened during the day, to allow trading to take place.
- Scheduling various works to occur during quieter periods of the film calendar.
- Constant communication with cinema management to reduce the amount of disruption.
Empire Cinemas’ CEO Justin Ribbons says customers’ patience during the building works will be rewarded.
“Poole continues to be at the forefront of our plans in terms of providing the best possible cinema experience and I hope they agree this is what we have delivered,” he said. “The new studios will give us the opportunity to screen titles that in the past may not have had a release locally as well as the opportunity to screen ‘alternative content’ such as opera, ballet, sporting events and music events live via satellite.”
It’s always a challenge to work in a live and operational environment.
A solid and dependable contractor is required who understands the needs of the business and can ensure continuity of shared services.
Maeve not only have an understanding of the importance of maintaining business continuity but also the absolute need to maintain high H&S standards in an environment that has a high degree of children visiting it.
The levels of finishes in this job were superb and are the standard that we mark all other works by.
